18th Century French Oak Console Table
18th Century French Oak Console or Side Table with Marble Top.
This fine table is of "cloud" shape, a variation on the demi lune with extra curves, that is very attractive and rarer than demi lune pieces. Under the beautiful marble top, shaped to fit the base and with a finely carved moulded edge, the frieze has beaded detailing top and bottom. The main portion of the frieze is fretted out, the design incorporating repeating flower and leaf motifs. The legs join the frame with rectangular blocks ornamented with floral paterae. The table stands on four leaf carved and fluted tapering legs, joined by an ornate shaped stretcher.
A highly attractive and unusual table.
