18th Century Italian Giltwood Console Table

An Outstanding 18th Century Neoclassical Italian Giltwood Console/Side Table of Good Size.
This wonderful table encapsulates all of the best features of late 18th century Italian furniture design in one piece. The table base is finely carved and gilded throughout. Supported by four turned legs with fluted and leaf carved details and stands on short toupie feet. The frieze of the table displays the talent of the carvers who created it. The corner blocks feature floral paterae on a textured ground. Below the frieze is a repeating bead and reel moulding. In the larger frieze panels are floral sprays, tied together with ribbons and bows and the central tablet on the frieze features the mask of Mercury or Hermes, messenger of the gods, with his winged head. The floral panels continue on the sides of the piece.
The table top is an original thick slab of veneered marble of great colour and figure with various shades of red, orange, pink, brown and cream.
A table of this quality can only have been produced by one of the major workshops of the period.
