An 18th Century Italian Walnut Serpentine Commode or Chest.
This elegant commode has two drawers of equal size. It is of serpentine shape with straight sides. The top is beautifully bookmatched, creating a geometric pattern and surrounded by crossbanding. The drawer fronts are also beautifully crossbanded in contrasting timber, the burl walnut being used as the primary veneer of great colour and figure. The apron is also serpentine shaped and it stands on tapering cabriole legs. The ormolu escutcheons to the drawers are in the rococo style.
