18th Century Italian Walnut Commode
SOLD
An Exceptional Late 18th Century Neopolitan Walnut, Parquetry and Marquetry Commode of Three Drawers.
This commode is a fine example of Italian, and specifically Neopolitan, furniture of the late 18th century. Every part of the surface of the piece has been inlaid in some way, the inlay ranging from the geometric arrangements of veneers to create chevrons on the drawer fronts, to complex floral paterae behind each escutcheon. The pilasters are inlaid with mock fluting and with inlaid blocks. The sides have received just as much attention as the front. Having a white marble top and ormolu toes. Italian furniture of this period was renowned for its parquetry in particular and this commode is a great example.
We feel this should be seen to be fully appreciated, the photos don't really do it justice.
