Large 19th Century French Chinoiserie Bureau Plat.
This lovely bureau plat or writing table is French but decorated in Chinese lacquer. The decoration across the entire table uses a black and gilt colour scheme. The writing surface is black leather with gilt tooling of exceptional quality. The surface is decorated with a repetitive geometric pattern and panels of figural and floral decoration. There are various levels of relief used, the decoration is not just flat painted. The metalwork is of particularly high quality, the cast and chased rococo form escutcheon plates and the ormolu banding around the top and the underside of the frame are beautifully finished and gilded and the sabots (foot mounts) are superb.
This is of very large scale and would have been made for an extremely grand house or apartment originally.
