19th Century Late Regency Mahogany Writing Table
An Exceptional Late Regency Writing Table, Almost Certainly by Gillows, with Tooled Leather Inset to the Top c.1820.
The table of rectangular form with a cast brass fretwork gallery to three sides and with re-entrant corners - a very nice visual touch that demanded significant skill from the maker to execute properly. The tooled leather insert to the top has a Greek key design to the edge which co-ordinates beautifully with the gallery. The table is supported on two typical Gillows end supports with turned spindle supports and outscrolling feet with original castors.
This piece relates to a number of designs for tables with spindle end supports in the Gillows estimate books dated c.1818-1820 and, with its highly sophisticated design, use of exceptional quilted mahogany veneers retaining its great colour, this is a wonderful piece of furniture.
