18th Century Italian Console Table
SOLD
An Unusual Early 18th Century Italian Console Table.
This very unusual table has a ‘cloud’ shape top, a variation on the demi lune with extra curves. The top is painted in imitation of marble, with an ebonised, moulded edge. Along the frieze of the table are a series of drop carvings which are both fluted and gilded. These are lambrequins, a term taken from upholstery treatments used on curtain pelmets, and they are extremely unusual in this context. The base of the table is of late baroque inspiration. The three table supports are turned and tapering with multiple design elements and the stretcher is of bowed form. The table stands on modified toupie form feet.
A very interesting table design.
