19th Century French Ebony and Ebonised Bookcase
A 19th Century French Ebony and Ebonised Bookcase of Excellent Quality.
Of breakfront form and glazed almost entirely from top to bottom with just a series of shallow drawers to the base. Having architecturally-influenced pilasters based on classical columns with capitals and its use of ebony and ebonised woods. It has a very striking look, highlighted by the use of kingwood crossbanding and carved detailing.
Inside are three movable shelves, also ebonised to the front edge. The back is panelled which is always a sign good quality. There are three drawers at the bottom with escutcheons and keys. The front feet are of flattened bun form. There is an additional drawer inside the glazed central compartment which is largely hidden when the doors are closed and probably intended for the storage of private documents or valuables.
A very attractive and excellent quality bookcase.
