A Monumental 19th Century Biedermeier Lacewood Centre Table
A Monumental 19th Century Lacewood Centre Table, Possibly Biedermeier.
This amazing table is of early 19th century date but is so unusual in design that it is not possible to be certain about quite where it was made. It was almost certainly the result of an individual commission rather than being a stock model and its huge size and scale suggest that it was made for a very important residence on the continent. The table consists of an unusual square platform with four turned and fluted legs which taper towards the top. Both the platform base and the table top are veneered in lacewood of superb colour and figuring, the veneers carefully laid so as to create a geometric pattern. The patination is particularly excellent and the variation in colour and shade throughout is extremely impressive and attractive. There are two drawers concealed in the frieze of the table, suggesting that it was probably originally conceived as a large library table.
An outstanding table of rare design and exceptional quality.
