19th Century English Walnut Parquetry Occasional Table
SOLD
A 19th Century English Walnut Parquetry Inlaid Hexagonal Occasional Table.
Of unusual hexagonal shape, the top on this table is beautifully inlaid with a trompe l'oeil design of repeating cubes. This design is often found on small Tunbridge ware boxes and tea caddies but is much rarer on larger pieces like this. It is likely that the top was made in one of the major Tunbridge ware workshops in Kent given the extremely high quality of the parquetry which is very neatly and cleanly executed. Each cube has three visible faces, each executed in a different, and contrasting, timber. The frieze of the table is also unusual, repeated on all six sides.
The table base is made of walnut in a simulated bamboo fashion with a central globular section joining the turned elements together. This globed element has an acorn finial on it.
This is a very interesting and unusual Victorian design.
