Pair of George III Mahogany Hall Chairs
SOLD
A Fine Pair of George III Mahogany Hall Chairs with Painted Talbot Sejant Crest, c.1790.
These hall chairs employ the fashionable oval backs associated with Hepplewhite and the Adam period and spade feet, associated with the designs of Thomas Sheraton. It is therefore likely that the chairs are a transitional design, made around 1790-1800. The seats of the chairs have wavy sides and bow fronts combined with a straight back. There are also carved paterae to the front and side blocks. Painted in the centre of the backs are fine crests which can be declared in heraldic terms as a talbot sejant ppr., paw resting on an escutcheon or shield erminois.
The chairs have great colour and patination and made of excellent quality timber and it is quite possible that they were made by a firm such as Gillows.
H 98cm x W 48cm x D 52cm
H 38½” x W 19” x D 20½”
