Pair of Early 19th Century Italian Walnut Commodes

SOLD
A Pair of Early 19th Century Italian Walnut Commodes with Bronze and Ormolu Detailing.

This fine pair of commodes are of rectangular form with an overhanging top and frieze, incorporating one drawer, and then two recessed drawers below. The commodes stand on square legs on oversized square feet, known as Marlborough feet when seen on English furniture. The walnut veneers have been very carefully chosen so that these pieces mirror each other, the veneers being laid so that they read from top to bottom on the drawer fronts and on the tops. The walnut chosen is highly figured and this provides much of the surface interest. The additional decorative detailing is provided by the cast brass escutcheons of oval shape, the lovely lion mask handles and the bronze and ormolu columns which function as pilasters/trusses and link the friezes to the feet. The commodes have aged beautifully and have a mellow colour which contrasts extremely effectively with the metal mounts.
