Early 18th Century English Japanned Chest of Drawers
SOLD
A Queen Anne Period Early 18th Century English Japanned Chest of Drawers. c.1710.
Standing on four flattened bun feet and with a three small and three large drawer configuration, this lovely chest is decorated throughout in the chinoiserie style in a combination of paint and varnish known as japanning. It has gilt brass hardware including fine drop handles and pierced escutcheon plates.
The decoration, applied to all of the drawer fronts and to the left and right sides of the carcass, is in high and low relief. The sections in high relief required multiple layers to be built up and polished back and were therefore very time consuming to produce. The subjects in the decoration on this piece are primarily figures in the Chinese style as well as exotic plants and birds, a tiger or similar creature bottom right and a few architectural features such as fences and bridges. There is also a flat gilt painted frieze consisting of repeating floral details at the top of the piece and the sides are outlined in gilt.
A wonderful piece of history as this type of furniture is getting incredibly difficult to find.
