Early 18th Century English Walnut Chest of Drawers

SOLD
An Early 18th Century English Walnut Chest of Drawers on Bun Feet.

This chest of two short and three long drawers is of a type popular from the reign of William and Mary to the early Queen Anne period with our example dating to the latter age c.1705. As is usual for a chest from this period, it stands on four turned bun feet and has escutcheon plates and drop handles. This piece makes use of finely figured walnut and some geometric stringing to create additional interest on the drawer fronts and also the top. The top is also widely cross banded. It is common for chests of this early date to have the sides made in oak or pine and not veneered as they were often made to fit in to a particular alcove in a house and so time and money could be saved by not veneering parts of the carcass that would not be on view. Our piece, however, is finely veneered throughout, making it much ore desirable as a result.

A lovely piece of English furniture from the beginning of the golden age of design in this country.
