Mid 18th Century Italian Rococo Silver Gilt Console Table with Marble Top
SOLD
A Superb Mid 18th Century Italian Rococo Silver Gilt Console Table with Original Sicilian Jasper Top.
This lovely table is typical of the fashion for rococo furniture which swept across Europe from France in the mid 18th century. The "silver gilt" finish is extremely attractive and has aged particularly well on this table. In design terms, the piece consists of a marble top supported on a beautifully carved serpentine frieze, adorned with C and S scrolls, leaf work and a stylised anthemion in the centre. The four cabriole legs terminate in hoof feet and the table stands beautifully.
Undoubtedly the most striking and important aspect of the table is its original Sicilian jasper top. Highly sought-after in this period throughout Europe, Sicilian jasper was used in the construction of the finest chimneypieces, table tops and other decorative projects and is renowned for its red and orange colouring combined with white and cream veins. This particular top has a moulded edge running around it and it follows the precise shape of the base, no mean feat in a piece like this of such exotic design. The craftsmanship and materials used in the making of this piece are both of the highest quality and this is a very attractive and interesting table.
