A Very High Quality Late 19th Century French Parquetry Inlaid Trunk or Coffer.

Primarily of walnut, this lovely trunk has been inlaid to each side with parquetry of the highest quality. The top has an inlaid Greek key border surrounding a "three dimensional" cube design. This pattern is a very common one during this period but rarely is it executed with this level of skill, the woods being very well chosen and giving the correct amount of shading to each cube. The front and sides are also ornamented with remarkable parquetry work, this more geometric in nature with a single repeating design to the front and a series of interlocking diamonds to the sides. Aside from the quality of the inlay, the construction of the trunk is also very high quality, with a panelled interior and fine quality hinges and latch.

This remarkable piece must have taken a considerable amount of work to produce. A remarkable example of the woodworker's art and a great decorative talking point.
