A Very Fine French Late 19th Century Mahogany Bureau Plat or Writing Table.
This fine Louis XVI style bureau plat or writing table features pull out writing slides to each side and a very finely gilt tooled leather top. The fluted legs and the drawer configuration are typical of Louis XVI models but it is the quality of the metal mounts that make this piece particularly interesting. The outstanding ormolu is beautifully cast and chased and the central guilloche mount to the long drawer is one that can be seen on tables stamped by the fine maker Henry Dasson. Features such as the finely made drawer dividers and the way that the the short drawers are actually a combination of one mock lower drawer front and one actual drawer (effectively giving some hidden storage space for valuables) are all signs of a workshop that was prepared to go the extra mile and produce a piece of furniture that was of finer than the usual.
