19th Century English Regency Rosewood Library Table

SOLD
A very fine English rosewood library table of late regency period c.1820

The top of this table is of particularly finely figured rosewood and lovely faded colour. The top is supported by two conventional end supports, the supports consisting of square section tapering columns descending to acanthus leaf carved terminals above carved corbels and interesting carved flattened bun form feet. The frieze of the table incorporates two drawers.

The quality of both the design and carving of this fine table is of the level one would expect to find on pieces by Gillows of Lancaster and London and it is possible that this piece might have come from their workshops. It would have graced a fine, and fashionably decorated, library of the regency period. The table is of a very good usable size, adding to its versatility, and the choice of rosewood veneers is particularly impressive. Tables of this sort were fashionable for a long period in the 19th century but the lack of a stretcher and the particularly clean lines on this example point to it being an earlier example. It is extremely well made, and has excellent quality of carving. A very interesting and usable piece of period furniture.

An exceptional design!
