Early 19th Century English Rosewood Bookcase/Side Cabinet
SOLD
A Fine Quality Early 19th Century English Rosewood Side Cabinet in the Grecian Revival Style.
Of rectangular form with a central triangular pediment and enriched throughout with classical detailing such as a fine bronzed wreath of laurel leaves and carved paterae. The columnar supports have interestingly carved capitals reminiscent of those found in ancient Egypt and modelled on lotus leaves. It is unusual for cabinets of this sort to have pediments and the recessed area in front of the pediment suggests that it was probably designed to be used for display. In the modern home this extra display space is extremely useful and the cabinet has a lot of storage space for a piece with a relatively small footprint in a room.
