Late 18th Century North Italian Marquetry Commode with Marble Top
SOLD
A Highly Important Late 18th Century North Italian Marquetry Commode in the Manner of Giuseppe Maggiolini.
This commode is a masterpiece of marquetry, using boxwood, kingwood, ebony and walnut, being finely inlaid on every surface other than the top which retains its fine original marble.
The simple rectangular form of the commode, on tapering legs with fine stringing, allows the complex marquetry and parquetry inlay to shine. From the finely inlaid border under the marble top to the beautiful vases of baroque inspiration and the Greek key design used on the inner borders on the drawers and the sides of the piece, the quality of the inlay is simply superb. Many of the timbers used in the inlay are exotic and the piece combines many different colours against the honey hue of the main veneer.
Guiseppe Maggiolini was probably the pre-eminent cabinetmaker in Italy in the neoclassical period and this commode relates closely to known examples from his workshop in terms of its combination of relatively austere form and exquisite inlay.
The master's clientele included royalty and aristocracy across Europe in his lifetime and pieces attributed to his workshop are still widely collected and sought after today. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of this quality.
