Large Early 19th Century Cherry Biedermeier Centre Table
SOLD
A Large and Fine Quality Early 19th Century Cherry Biedermeier Centre Table of Very Unusual Design.
The large circular top with an overhanging half round moulding and a finely gilt tooled leather insert. The frieze has two concealed drawers with a key. The top is supported on a central bulbous column as well as a spiral form platform base with six additional supports of pronounced cabriole form. Each of these supports has an ebonised ball in a cherry wood socket at the top and further ebonised details to the base. The feet also ebonised.
This table is of very bold design and is not one of the many standard designs often encountered in furniture of this period. It is likely to have been designed for a particular space, perhaps a grand European library, rather than having been a stock item produced by a cabinet making firm. The combination of the relatively simple and plain top with the exaggerated legs is very pleasing and the spiral platform is a lovely touch that would have been difficult to design in such a harmonious manner. The way that the table combines all of these different elements so seamlessly is a tribute to all of those involved in its design and construction.
