Pair of Early 18th Century Walnut Commodes
SOLD
A fabulous pair of early 18th Century walnut commodes with remarkable original grey, green and white marble tops. Having three drawers, the top one slightly overhanging the others, and supported by fluted brass columns. The drawers having superb use of veneers and excellent bookmatched flaming, with painted decoration to enhance the pattern of the grains in the veneer. Standing on sturdy square legs and block feet.
This form of decoration was often used to make common timber look like more expensive wood. It is found in many styles and periods, from the modest to the grand. Characterised by a strong sense of balance and symmetry.
Generally speaking graining was considered fashionable during the Baroque period at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th centuries, but then fell into decline. It found favour once again in the Regency period in the opening decades of the 19th Century.
