George I Walnut Card Table

A superb George I walnut card table having a rare needlework interior and of neat proportions. The top is quarter veneered with stringing to the border and opens to reveal its unusual, original needlework interior depicting playing cards within a border of flowers and foliage. A single drawer with oak linings and with an engraved brass escutcheon. The frieze has a canted edge. Raised on cabriole legs, terminating on pad feet.
In the drawer there is a label which indicates that the table belonged to the 'House of Lords' at one time - in the chancellor's residence. Wonderful colour and patination.
