19th century English oak specimen wood table with a hexagonal top and specimen veneer, inlaid chess board centre. Made with yew, oak and ebony wood. Raised on a tapering octagonal column and having a triform base with unusual shaped feet.
Furniture makers of this era used specimen pieces to show their customers some examples of what different veneers looked like. These examples were also very desired items for affluent clients, who would enjoy being able to show off the extraordinary and unusual woods in their homes.
