Grand Scale 18th Century Italian Walnut Desk

A Large and Imposing 18th Century Italian Walnut Writing Table or Desk.
Designed in the form of two half pedestals, this piece is of large size and commanding presence. The top features a low superstructure which helps to keep books and papers in their proper place. Each of the pedestals incorporates two drawers with shield-shaped brass ecutcheons and the pedestals are supported by classical columns with contrasting capitals and bases. The columns stand on spade feet. All of these details suggest a date of c.1770-80.
The walnut employed throughout is of excellent figure and colour, particularly on the drawer fronts which retain a very fine patination. The table is finish to the back as well, meaning that it is free standing and could be employed in the centre of a room as well as placed as against a wall.
This is a writing table of very unusual form and pleasing proportions.
